Simple Version[edit]

The verb {{{1}}} is a verbum dicendi because it can be used to express the (real or figurative) utterance of speech. The past-tense form {{{2}}} is more common than the present-tense. This verbum dicendi can be used in (a dialogue tag/reported speech/both dialogue tags and reported speech). See Appendix:Verbum dicendi for more.

So the template would be:

  • {{verbum dicendi|say|said|both}}
  • {{verbum dicendi|speak|spoke|reported}}
  • {{verbum dicendi|intone|intoned|tag}}

Complex Version[edit]

The verb {{{1}}} is a verbum dicendi because it can be used to express the (real or figurative) utterance of speech. The past-tense form {{{2}}} is more common than the present-tense. This verbum dicendi can be used in the following ways:
TAG: As a dialogue tag, to introduce or attribute quoted dialogue or dialogue-like ideas: "How's it going?" he {{{2}}}.
RT: For reported speech, to explain or paraphrase words: He {{{2}}} that everything was fine.
RPO: For reported speech, to explain or paraphrase words: He {{{2}}} of everything being fine.
RPA: For reported speech, to explain or paraphrase words: He {{{2}}} about everything being fine.
OL: Used without an object to express utterances without describing the actual words, if there are any: He {{{2}}}.

Documentation[edit]

So the user will write {{Verba dicendi|say|said|object=needs}} and the template will supply the lines marked RT and TAG. This could be put in a usage note on both say and said, or just at say with a different template at said that says "this is the most common form of this verbum dicendi, see say".

This documentation will contain questions like "can you use this verb in the sentence he (blanked) that everything was fine? to help people determine which option each verb should take.
