Simple Version[edit]
The verb {{{1}}} is a verbum dicendi because it can be used to express the (real or figurative) utterance of speech. The past-tense form {{{2}}} is more common than the present-tense. This verbum dicendi can be used in (a dialogue tag/reported speech/both dialogue tags and reported speech). See Appendix:Verbum dicendi for more. |
So the template would be:

Complex Version[edit]
The verb {{{1}}} is a verbum dicendi because it can be used to express the (real or figurative) utterance of speech. The past-tense form {{{2}}} is more common than the present-tense. This verbum dicendi can be used in the following ways:

- object=forbidden: speak talk write (RT and OL)
- object=optional1: mumble whisper murmur boast complain (RPO and RPA and RT and TAG and OL)
- object=optional2: ask shout yell fume hiss stammer sing call lie rap inquire nag snicker (RPA and TAG and OL)
- object=optional3: think ejaculate sign beg growl echo holler howl mutter reply swear splutter sputter text call out opine promise plead screech snort pray (RT and TAG and OL)
- object=optional4: bark agree disagree grumble groan drawl shriek scream wail snarl sob whimper (RT and RPA and TAG and OL)
- object=tagonly: interrupt demand be like question orate intone quote thunder (TAG only)
Documentation[edit]
So the user will write {{Verba dicendi|say|said|object=needs}} and the template will supply the lines marked RT and TAG. This could be put in a usage note on both say and said, or just at say with a different template at said that says "this is the most common form of this verbum dicendi, see say".
This documentation will contain questions like "can you use this verb in the sentence he (blanked) that everything was fine? to help people determine which option each verb should take.
