Etymology

According to Platts, probably inherited from Sanskrit अवर (avara), and thus a doublet of अवर (avar). However, according to Turner, probably from the same macro-family of Prakrit words with "defective" connotations starting with a "b" or "bh" as Prakrit [Term?] (“*bukka”).
