From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ʼnak, ʼnakk, ʼanak, or Angkorian Old Khmer ʼnak, ʼanak, ʼnakk, ʼnāk, ʼnāka, nāk, nākk, nakk (“worthy: courtesy title for honorable men”).

From Old Khmer ʼnaka, ʼanaka, ʼnak, naka, nãka, nâka, naga (“individual, one, person; inhabitant, native, resident; servant; worker; etc”). Cognate with Modern Khmer អ្នក (nĕək), Khmer នាក់ (nĕək).
