Glyph origin[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *pʰew, *pʰews) : semantic (water) + phonetic (OC *pʰew)

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pyaw (swim, float, raft) (STEDT; Benedict, 1972; Schuessler, 2007).

Inside Chinese, cognate with (OC *bu, “to float”), (OC *po, “raft”), (OC *pʰo, *bo) & (OC *bu, *pʰuw, “raft, beam”);
Outside Chinese, cognate with Tibetan འཕྱོ་བ ('phyo ba, swim, float, soar), & Jingpho [script needed] (pyau ~ byau, fly, float; play, shoot, as a fish).
