From Middle Chinese (MC maeng). Recorded as Middle Korean ᄆᆡᇰ (moyng) (Yale: moyng) in Hunmong Jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [mɛ(ː)ŋ] ~ [me̞(ː)ŋ]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)/(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
