Glyph origin[edit]

Historical forms of the character
Shang Western Zhou Warring States Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han) Liushutong (compiled in Ming)
Oracle bone script Bronze inscriptions Chu slip and silk script Small seal script Transcribed ancient scripts

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *ɡljilʔ, *ɡljils, *ɢljils): phonetic (OC *ɡle, *ɢljils) + semantic (see).

Related to (“to see; to meet”). The Chu form did not include the phonetic component, making it near-identical to , but with the lower component a kneeling figure rather than a standing one. (Galambos, 2006)
