Hi all

My name is Alan. I have made a couple of contributions to Wikipedia, but this Wiktionary project I find very interesting, and easier to make contributions.

Time to say some more about myself..... As some of you have already seen, my main interests in here are to do with phrases, phrasal verbs, prepositional phrases, collocations, and a bit of Spanish translation when time allows.

I am intrigued by the Wiktionary project because it seems to allow more coverage of that grey area missed out from most words books (dictionaries) and grammar books. Words are the bricks. Grammar is the mortar. But people use a lot of prefabricated structures to communicate. People recognise patterns more quickly than the parts of the pattern. That is why phrases and chunks are so important. The versatility of the Wikt online dictionary project allows us to explore and explain these chunks in a way that standard books cannot manage. I will be trying to make the most of these possibilities.

As such, I will be keeping a close eye on phrasal verbs, various category sections to do with phrases, setting up (with prior approval) such initiatives as the Make Do Take Have appendix, and anything else that seems to fit in with my special interest.

If anyone wants to know a bit more about chunk theory, I will be happy to share. Algrif 15:36, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

So, the time has come. Somehow I think I always knew it would. Disillusioned by the project. Seeing people enter, add, and disappear. Enter, destroy, disappear. Appearing to construct the east wing, while tearing down the west wing. Reappearing, pseudo-appearing.

There are people here who are constructive. I'm glad they feel they are accomplishing something. However, the whole project looks more like a Tower of Babel than a dictionary. Nothing more than anarchy dressed up as compromise and co-operation. Par for the course in this day and age, as far as I can see. But you can count me out. Asi que, I fare thee farewell, adieu. (Babel-speak). -- ALGRIF talk 20:49, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

And so now I join the ranks of those "reappearing", or perhaps "pseudo-appearing". I see some evidence of a more serious attitude to the tasks at hand. There are things I might contribute to, especially where understanding of compound forms (chunks:- idioms, phrasal verbs, collocates) are at issue. However, my profile will continue to be low. -- ALGRIF talk 12:52, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

Nope. I was right first time. Load of old b*****ks Nothing more than anarchy dressed up as compromise and co-operation. Waste of time. ALGRIF talk 11:06, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
