Etymology[edit]

From Old Swedish ært f, from Old Norse ertr, from Old Saxon erit,[1] eriwit, from Proto-Germanic *arwīts. Cognates include Danish ært, Faroese ertur, Norwegian ert, Dutch erwt and German Erbse. Possibly related to Latin ervum and Ancient Greek ὄροβος (órobos).[1]
