From Proto-Tocharian *āke, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱ-os, from *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”). Cognate with English edge, Ancient Greek ἀκή (akḗ, “point”), and Russian ость (ostʹ, “awn”).
