Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اصلامق (ıslamak), from metathesis of *sula-. Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *sub (water). Compare Karakhanid [script needed] (ïsla-), [script needed] (ïsïl-). Doublet of sula- (to water).
