Ellipsis of Góry Świętokrzyskie (literally “mountains of the Holy Cross”), from góry and świętokrzyskie, a compound of święty (“holy”) + -o- + krzyż (“cross”) + -ski (adjectival suffix) + -e (nonvirile plural suffix reinterpreted as neuter singular).
