Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From a non-Indo-European substrate word meaning "beech, oak" and found also in Greek γάβρος (gávros, hornbeam), Russian граб (grab, hornbeam) and Ancient Greek κράββατος (krábbatos, couch, mattress). Furnée further compares γοβρίαι (gobríai, torches), which cannot be ignored.
