Etymology[edit]

From Koine Greek διευθύνω (dieuthúnō, to make straight, to rule), from δια- (dia-, through) + εὐθύνω (euthúnō, I make straight, I direct). For the modern sense of "to direct, manage", semantic loan from French diriger.
