Etymology[edit]

δοῦπος (doûpos) +‎ -έω (-éō); earlier *γδουπέω (*gdoupéō) as shown by augmented aorist forms beginning ἐγδ- (egd-) as well as the prefixed form ἐπιγδουπέω (epigdoupéō).
