Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *tḱn̥-, zero-grade of *tḱen- (strike), with a *y progressive aspect marker and simplification of Proto-Indo-European *tḱ- to *ḱ- before a syllabic nasal (compare χαμαί (khamaí) and Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥tóm).
