Lewy suggests a Semitic origin, comparing the gloss with Semitic words for "skull", like Aramaic גּוּלְגַּלְתָּא (gulgaltā), Hebrew גֻּלְגֹּלֶת (gulgṓleṯ) and Akkadian 𒄢𒄢𒇻 (/gulgullu/).
