Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from Lydian, while others have proposed a Semitic origin. Furnée compares the word with πηκτίς (pēktís, Lydian stringed instrument) and reconstructs a pre-form *μάγδις (*mágdis).
