Etymology[edit]

A Semitic borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Semitic *mašk-; cognates are Armenian մաշկ (mašk, skin, hide), Arabic مَسْك (mask) and Classical Syriac ܡܫܟܐ (meškā, skin).
