From Proto-Hellenic *prātḗr, from Proto-Indo-European *pr̥h₂tḗr, from *perh₂- (sell) + *-tḗr. Compare πέρνημῐ (pérnēmi). Outside of Hellenic, compare Latin pars, whence English party.
