Etymology[edit]

From πυρο- (pyro-, pyro-, fire) + stem σβεσ- as in ancient σβέννυμι (sbénnumi) [see modern σβήνω (svíno, put out)] + -της (-tis).[1] Attested since 1855.[2][3]
