Etymology[edit]

Of unclear origin. Traditionally derived either from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *pós (afterwards) or from Proto-Indo-European *h₂epo (off, away), and often compared with Sanskrit पुनर् (punar, back, again), but Beekes is skeptical.
