Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish فشك (fişek, cartridge), from Persian فشنگ (fešang, bullet); see there for more. One theory derives the Persian word from Ancient Greek φῦσιγξ (phûsinx), making φισέκι (fiséki) a doublet of φυσίγγιο (fysíngio), but this is not certain at all.
