Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Clearly related to χαράδρα (kharádra, gorge, ravine; torrent) and thus from Pre-Greek. The older connection with χαράσσω (kharássō, to carve, engrave) must be given up.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

χέρᾰδος (khéradosn (genitive χερᾰ́δεος); third declension

  1. silt, debris, gravel and rubbish, brought down by torrents
