Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Quite uncertain. Taken to be a verbal noun to χάσκω (kháskō, to yawn), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeh₁y- (to gape, be wide open). Compare χηλός (khēlós, coffer).
