Etymology[edit]

From Old Ossetic (Sarmatian) *dānu nazdya "the close river" (the Dnieper being the far one). The first element is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰánwati << *dʰénh₂- ~ dʰn̥h₂-u- << Proto-Indo-European *dʰenh₂- (to flow).
