Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Ukrainian Оде́са (Odésa), built during Katherine II's reign as part of the "Greek Project". Named after Ancient Greek Ὀδησσός (Odēssós) which was thought to be located in the vicinity of the Ukrainian city.
