From Old East Slavic Олександра (Oleksandra), from Ancient Greek Ἀλέξανδρα (Aléxandra), compounded from ἀλέξω (aléxō, I defend) +‎ ἀνδρός (andrós), genitive of ἀνήρ (anḗr, man): "defender of men". Cognate with English Alexandra.
