From Proto-Turkic *sat-ïg-čï (seller), from Proto-Turkic *sat- (to sell).

Cognate with Bashkir һатыусы (hatıwsı, seller), Turkish satıcı (seller), Chuvash сутуҫӑ (sut̬uś̬ă, salesman), etc.

Synchronously, атыы (sale) +‎ -сыт (affix forming an agent noun).
