Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *bodagčï, derived from Proto-Turkic *bodag (paint, dye). Equivalent to бойу (boyu, paint) +‎ -чы (-čï, affix forming an agent noun). Cognate with Bashkir буяусы (buyawsı), Kazakh бояушы (boäuşy), Kyrgyz боёкчу (boyokcu), Tatar буяучы (buyawçı), Uyghur بوياقچى (boyaqchi), Uzbek boʻyoqchi.
