Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Compound of быцъынӕг (byc’ynæg, Pecheneg(s)) +‎ скъуынын (sk’°ynyn, to exterminate), literally to exterminate the Pechenegs.[1][2] The expression reflects the contempt of the Alanians ancestors of the Ossetians for the nomadic Pechenegs, who were responsible for frequent raids into their kingdom. Given its meaning, it was very likely coined after John II Komnenos' victory against this Turkic tribe in 1122 or 1123 CE.
