Etymology[edit]
From Classical Mongolian ᠪᠡᠶᠡ (bey-e), from Middle Mongol [Term?], from Proto-Mongolic *beje. Cognate with Mongolian бие (bije), Kalmyk бий (biy), etc. Compare also Yakut бэйэ (beye, “body; self”), Manchu ᠪᡝᠶᡝ (beye, “body”), Evenki бэе (bəje, “body; person”), etc.
