Bashkir[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From *bölük (division, section), from Proto-Turkic *bȫl- (to divide, separate).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (bölük, part; section, chapter);[1] Kazakh бөлік (bölık, part; section), Kyrgyz бөлүк (bölük, division, section), Kumyk бёлюк (bölük, part, group, section), Khakas пӧлік (part, section, department), Northern Altai пӧлӱк (pölük, part, section, department), Southern Altai бӧлӱк (bölük, part, section, department), Tuvan бөлүк (bölük, group, category, chapter), Turkish bölük (division).

Should be kept apart from *böläk (division, section) that is widely attested across Turkic languages.
