From Proto-Mordvinic *vej, from Proto-Uralic *üje (night). Cognates include Finnish , Estonian öö, Livonian īe, Northern Sami idja, Inari Sami ijjâ, Udmurt уй (uj), Komi-Zyrian вой (voj), Southern Mansi йӣ (), Hungarian éj.
