Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mordvinic *vərgas, cognate with Moksha върьгаз (vəŕgaz). The Mordvinic word was likely borrowed from an Indo-Iranian source, compare Proto-Iranian *wŕ̥kah (from Proto-Indo-European *wĺ̥kʷos).
