Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dyxъ, deverbal from *dyxati (compare Russian ды́хать (dýxatʹ)). Cognate with literary Bulgarian дих (dih, breath), dialectal Macedonian дих (dih, sigh, breath), Serbo-Croatian dȋh (sigh, breath), Slovak dych (sigh, breath).
