Etymology[edit]

Likely from an unattested Old Bulgarian root *кате́рь (*katérʹ, squirrel), cf. катеричка. In turn from Thracian *kater-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)koktér or *(s)kaktér from the roots *(s)kok- (to jump) or *(s)kat- (to jump) respectively.
