Inherited from Proto-Slavic *mětati, derived via vṛddhi from *metati (to throw).

  2. (ditransitive) to pass [something] by tossing [it onto someone]
  3. (transitive) to slam, to throw down [somebody/something]

  4. (transitive) to fling, to toss up (a blanket, laundry on a line, etc.)
