Etymology

From *nendäg "what, what type of", from Proto-Turkic *nē- (“what”).

Cognate with Tatar нинди (nindi, “what type of”).

Compare with Kyrgyz кандай (kanday, “what, what type of”), which is formed following the same pattern from a different interrogative root, Proto-Turkic *ka-.
