Deverbal from посе́ять (poséjatʹ), but structurally as if from nonexistent imperfective *посева́ть (*posevátʹ); compare prefixed imperfectives in -сева́ть (-sevátʹ), e.g. imperfective обсева́ть (obsevátʹ) to perfective обсе́ять (obséjatʹ), imperfective засева́ть (zasevátʹ) to perfective засе́ять (zaséjatʹ).
