Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly related to Bulgarian стежер (stežer, “pole”), which also means oak in some dialects. Cf. also Romanian stejar (“oak”).

On a surface level, resembles Old Church Slavonic остегъ (ostegŭ), остежь (ostežĭ, “zip, fastener (of cloths)”) and Polish ścieg (“stitch”), Czech steh (“stitch”) from Proto-Slavic *stegъ.
