Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic сѫщьство (sǫštĭstvo). By surface analysis, су́щий (súščij) +‎ -ество (-estvo).

  • The noun существо́ is one of the rare Russian neuter nouns to have animacy. Other neuter nouns with animacy include живо́тное (živótnoje), насеко́мое (nasekómoje), etc.
