From Proto-Mordvinic *säŕgə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *särke, cognate to Finnish särki, Estonian särg (roach), possibly also to Komi-Zyrian чери (ćeri) and Udmurt чориг (ćorig, fish).
