From Middle Mongol *čečen (wise, clever), from Proto-Mongolic *secen (wise, clever), compare Mongolian цэцэн (cecen, wise, clever, shrewd; precise, well-aimed).

Cognate with Kazakh шешен (şeşen, orator), Kyrgyz чечен (cecen, eloquent; orator), Southern Altai чечен (čečen, eloquent; orator), Uyghur چېچەن (chëchen, eloquent; orator), Khakas чиченъ (çiçenʺ, sharp-shooter; well-aimed), etc.
