From Proto-Mordvinic *təŕams~*ťəŕams, inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic *terɜ- (“to feed, bring up”). Cognates include Komi-Permyak тӧравны (töravny), тӧрасьны (töraśny, “to care, look after”).
