Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *sïčgan (mouse). Often considered a nomen agentis from the verb *sïč- (to defecate). Cognate with Old Uyghur syčγ՚n (sïčɣan, mouse); Karakhanid سِجْغانْ (sïčɣān, mouse), Tatar тычкан (tıçkan), Bashkir сысҡан (sısqan), Kyrgyz чычкан (cıckan), Southern Altai чычкан (čïčkan), Shor шышқан (šïšqan), Uzbek sichqon, Uyghur چاشقان (chashqan), Turkmen syçan, Turkish sıçan (rat), etc.

The computing sense is a semantic loan from English mouse.
