From Common Turkic jilek ("berry"), from Proto-Turkic *jegelek.

Cognate with Southern Altai јилек (ǰilek), Tatar җиләк (ciläk), Kazakh жидек (jidek), Karachay-Balkar джилек (cilek), etc.

Compare also Armenian ելակ (elak), a Turkic borrowing.
