Ukrainian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Iranian languages through Western or Central European languages, compare Italian ciabatta or German Schabatte and Persian چپت (čapat, a kind of traditional leather shoe). Due to the accent on the first syllable, the mediation of the Turkic languages is unlikely, compare Tatar чабата (çabata, overshoes).
