Chuvash[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Tatar [Term?] (“to endure”), ultimately from Middle Mongol ᠴᠢᠳᠠᠬᠤ (čidaqu, “to be able to, to be capable”) (cf. Mongolian чадах (čadax)).[1][2][3]

Verb[edit]

чӑт • (čăt)

  1. (intransitive) to endure, resist, withstand
    пӑр çынна чӑтать ― păr çynna čăt̬atʹ ― the ice can withstand a person
  2. (intransitive) to be held back
    вăл кулмасӑр чӑтса лараймарӗ ― văl k̬ulmas̬ăr čătsa larajmarĕ ― he could not hold himself from laughing
