Etymology[edit]

From Persian شترنگ (šatrang, shatranj), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ctlng /⁠čatrang⁠/), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga).

Cognate with Kalmyk шатр (şatr), found as early as Middle Mongol as شطرنجين (šaṭranjin, genitive singular).
