Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian شهر (šahr, a city, a town), from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭲𐭥𐭩 (štry /šahr/), from Proto-Iranian *xšaθram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšatrám n. Vowels of both syllables had become back due to the influence of intervocalic Persian glottal consonant ـهـ (-h-).

Compare also Tatar шәһәр (şähär); Uzbek shahar, Uyghur شەھەر (sheher); Azerbaijani şəhər, Turkish şehir; etc.
